Dhruv Jurel is a young Indian cricketer, who represents Uttar Pradesh in domestic cricket and plays for Rajasthan Royals in the IPL. He is a right handed wicketkeeper batsman. Dhruv was the vice-captain of the Indian team in the 2020 Under-19 World Cup. Jurel made his international Test debut on 15 February 2024 against England in Rajkot.

Dhruv Jurel Birth and Family

On January 21, 2001, Dhruv Jurel was born in Agra, Uttar Pradesh. His full name is Dhruv Chand Jurel. His father, Nem Singh Jurel, was in the Indian Army and served in the 1999 Kargil War. His mother, Rajni Jurel, is a housewife. Dhruv has an elder sister Neru Jurel. Dhruv Jurel’s father wanted his son to join the Indian Army and serve the country. But Dhruv was interested in cricket, so he chose cricket as his career.

Dhruv Jurel Early Life

Initially Dhruv Jurel wanted to join the Army like his father, but at the age of 10, when he saw some people playing cricket in the camp for the first time, his interest in cricket started increasing. After this, he started playing cricket in a school camp and started dreaming of becoming a cricketer. He started making good shots in school at the age of just 12. However, during this time Dhruv lied to his father that he was only learning swimming in school.

But when his father came to know that Dhruv had also started cricket coaching, he had to face his father’s anger. Later, seeing Dhruv’s love for cricket, his father allowed him to play cricket. He also took a loan of some money and got Dhruv a bat. However, the financial condition of his house was bad. In such a situation, his father wanted him to stop playing cricket and concentrate on getting a government job. That’s why he refused to get cricket kit to Dhruv.

Because of this, Dhruv locked himself in the bathroom and even threatened to leave the house if he did not get the cricket kit. This was the reason why Dhruv’s mother sold her gold chain and got Dhruv a cricket kit. After this, Dhruv took training from coach Parvendra Yadav at Springdale Cricket Academy, Agra and coach Abhay Singh at Aster Cricket Academy, Noida. Seeing Dhruv’s interest and talent in cricket, later his father also started supporting him. At the age of 14, he was selected in Under-14 and then played for Uttar Pradesh Under-16 and Under-19 teams.

In the year 2014, he played six matches in the Under-17 School National Cricket T20 Championship and scored more than 600 runs with four centuries and two half-centuries. Subsequently, in the 2015 Under-14 Raj Singh Dungarpur Trophy, he scored 152 runs for Uttar Pradesh Under-14 and scored 137 runs in the final against Madhya Pradesh. In the 2018-19 Cooch Behar Trophy, he scored 762 runs in 11 matches and took 51 catches. Given his excellent performance in the 2020 Under-19 Cricket World Cup, he was made the vice-captain of the Indian team, where his team lost to Bangladesh in the final of the Under-19 World Cup. However, under his captaincy, Dhruv made India win the Under-19 Asia Cup.

Dhruv Jurel Domestic Cricket Career

On 10 January 2021, Dhruv Jurel made his T20 debut for Uttar Pradesh in the 2020–2021 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. In his first match against Punjab, he scored 23 runs in 30 balls. He played his first-class debut against Vidarbha in the 2021–22 Ranji Trophy on February 17, 2022. In the first innings of the match, he scored 64 runs in 139 balls with the help of 11 fours and was out for just 4 runs in the second innings.

Dhruv was later included in the India A squad for the 2023 ACC Men’s Emerging Asia Cup. On July 14, 2023, he played in the ACC Men’s Emerging Cup versus UAE A, making his List A debut. However, Dhruv did not get a chance to bat in that match. So far, he has scored 189 runs in 10 List A matches at an average of 47.25. Dhruv Jurel played an innings of 249 runs in the first-class match against Nagaland in December 2022. During this time, he attracted everyone’s attention with his brilliant batting in the middle order.

Dhruv Jurel International Cricket Career

In January 2024, Dhruv Jurel was named in the Indian Test squad for the first two Tests of the five-Test series against England. He was selected as the third wicketkeeper batsman in the Indian team. He made his international debut on 15 February 2024, in the third Test match against England in Rajkot and scored 46 runs in 104 balls. In his second match against England in Ranchi, Jurel scored 90* in the first innings and 39* in the second innings. For this brilliant performance, Jurel was awarded Man of the Match.

In the 2022 IPL mega auction, Rajasthan Royals bought Dhruv Jurel at a base price of Rs 20 lakh. But he did not get a chance to play in any match that season. However, Rajasthan franchise retained him in the team for the next season. On 05 April 2023, Dhruv Jurel made his IPL debut against Punjab Kings. While debuting as an impact player, he scored unbeaten 32 runs with the help of 3 fours and 2 sixes in 15 balls in his first IPL match. His brilliant batting had created a lot of discussion.

Dhruv Jurel played 13 matches in the 2023 IPL season and scored 152 runs at an average of 21.71 and strike rate of 172.73. He has been retained by the Rajasthan team for the 2024 Indian Premier League. He will be seen playing for Rajasthan team in 2024 IPL.
