ICC World Cup 2023: Schedule, Host Country And Venues

The much-awaited 13th edition of Cricket World Cup 2023 is definitely the biggest cricket mega event of the year. It will be held in India from 5 October to 19 November 2023. It will be a historic moment for India as India will be hosting the tournament alone for the first time. Earlier, India co-hosted the World Cup thrice in 1987, 1996 and 2011.

This tournament will be played in a round-robin format, with each team playing the other ten teams once each. The top four teams will then play in the semi-finals, with the winners of the semi-finals facing each other in the final. A total of 48 matches of the tournament will be played across twelve cities in India.

The Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad will host the opening match between England and New Zealand as well as the final of the Cricket World Cup on November 19. , Insiders close to the organization have already revealed the cities that will host the prestigious tournament later this year.

In 2019, Australia and New Zealand were co-hosts, before the competition returned to England in 2019. Australia is the most successful side in history having won the World Cup 5 times, West Indies and India have won 2 titles and are second on the list, followed by Pakistan, Sri Lanka and England who have won the World Cup once.

ICC World Cup History

Till date, 12TH editions of ICC World Cup have been played. The first edition of the World Cup was played in 1975 in England in which only 8 teams participated. West Indies won the World Cup for the first time by defeating Australia in the final. The second and third editions of the tournament were also held in England with West Indies and India winning those editions respectively.

For the first time in 1987, the fourth edition of the World Cup was played outside England and was co-hosted by India and Pakistan. For the first time in this tournament, 50-over matches were played in ODIs. Earlier there were 60 overs in an innings of ODI. In 1992, Australia and New Zealand co-hosted the fifth edition of the tournament, while India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka co-hosted the next sixth edition in 1996.

Three years later, the tournament returned to Europe as England, Scotland, Ireland, Wales and the Netherlands co-hosted its seventh edition. Four years later, it was the eighth edition of the World Cup held for the first time in Africa, with South Africa, Zimbabwe and Kenya co-hosting it. The West Indies hosted the ninth edition of the ICC World Cup for the first time in 2007, followed by the 10th edition of the tournament co-hosted by India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka in Asia.

Venues for the ICC World Cup 2023

As per the reports, the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 will be held in 12 different cities across India while the venues can be changed if required. For the last ODI World Cup in 2011, only six of the 12 selected cities (Bangalore, Kolkata, Delhi, Ahmedabad, Mumbai and Chennai) were the host cities.

ICC World Cup pathway to qualify

The Super League 2020-23 was the main route to qualify for the ICC World Cup 2023. Thereby, the top seven teams in the competition along with hosts India have automatically qualified for the ICC World Cup.

The remaining five teams from the Super League table, the top three teams from the ICC Cricket World Cup League 2, and the top two teams from the 2023 World Cup Qualifier playoff will play each other to decide the last two spots in the 2023 World Cup Qualifier in Zimbabwe in June and July 2023.

ICC World Cup 2023 Team List

A total of 10 teams will participate in the 13th edition of the upcoming ICC World Cup 2023. The format of the 13th edition will be as per the World Cup edition played in 2019. All 10 teams will play each other once in a round-robin format.

Each team will get two points for a win while each team participating in a game that ends in a draw will get one point. After the end of the round-robin stage, the top four teams advance to the semi-finals.

So far, India, England, New Zealand, Australia, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Afghanistan and South Africa have qualified for the ICC World Cup 2023.
